Coffee. Coffee in a single cup serving. My morning savior, for so many reasons: One, I don’t have a giant coffee maker (or coffee maker of any size, for that matter) taking up space in my tiny kitchen. Two, it limits me to one cup so I don’t over-do it (okay, okay… That’s not always true). Three, it’s coffee. I can’t live without my morning coffee.
Lately I’ve been adding cinnamon to my coffee grounds and today I tossed in yet another amazing ingredient: turmeric. I’m slightly obsessed with turmeric. It’s not only loaded with health benefits but is also delicious and, in this recipe, it gives your coffee a little Holiday kick – perfect for the chilly mornings us Californian’s have been experiencing. I was so excited by the yumminess that I had to share!
The benefits associated with drinking coffee seems to be popular subject in the mid lately. I read an interesting article on NPR’s site the other day, on a study conducted by the Harvard TH Chan School of Public Health that said “both caffeinated and decaffeinated coffee can lower the risk of death from cardiovascular disease, neurological disease such as Parkinson’s, type 2 diabetes and even suicide… Bioactive compounds in coffee reduce insulin resistance and systematic inflammation.” You can find the full article Here.
This mornings particular cup of joe is loaded with healthy goodness and, aside from what’s been said above about the benefits of coffee, I’ve listed only SOME of the benefits of the other ingredients for you below:
Turmeric: antioxidant & anti-inflammatory, tames heartburn and stomach indigestion, delays diabetes, improves brain function and lowers risk of brain disease, prevents cancer, lowers risk of heart disease, cures joint pain, may prevent and even treat Alzheimer’s disease, aides in relieving arthritic pain, helps fight depression, helps fight aging and age-related diseases.
Cinnamon: antioxidant & anti-inflammatory, may reduce risk of heart disease, improves sensitivity to the hormone insulin, lowers blood sugar levels and has anti-diabetic effect, has beneficial effects on neurodegenerative diseases, protects against cancer, helps fight bacterial and fungal infections, may help fight HIV virus, reduces symptoms of IBS & PMS (can I get an amen!), aids in weight loss by increasing blood circulation and boosting metabolism.
And it goes on and on and on and on. This is a feel good, smell good, TASTE good cup right here!
Add a little almond milk and honey and you’ve got the finished product… And, if you’re like me by the time you’ve reached here, an almost finished cup… Because when I actually make it up at 5:30 for yoga (pre-coffee!!), jet home, shower, and am back in cozies and en-route to the beach w/ the pup by 7:30, it just can’t wait.
Cheers to your health!
