Super Yummy Superfood Smoothie

It is HOT, HOT, HOT on the Central Coast and, while I feel like I shouldn’t be complaining out of sympathy for my East Coast friends, I’m so tired of it! I thought we were supposed to be experiencing El Nino, but, alas, I woke up to an 80 degree “winter” day in Santa Barbara today which, on the bright side (and I’m really looking for one here), got me up and moving and being productive.

A mere two days ago… Take me back!

I don’t know about you guys but when the heat catches me off guard I find it hard to eat, let alone cook. Once I get used to the weather change I’m fine, but those first few days I feel like I have to force feed myself. Which is what happened this morning. I had had my coffee and was at the point when I usually get hungry and… Nothing. So I waited… Still nothing. So then I started to think about different options… Savory, sweet, hot, cold, liquid, solid… Still nothing. So I took control (something I have such a hard time with) and made a smoothie.  Because my body needed nutrients, my metabolism needed to get going, and because when is there ever a bad time for a smoothie?! My favorite smoothies aren’t super fruity and tropical because I get tired of sweet drinks quickly. I lean towards mellow, vanilla-y combinations that have just enough flavor to allow me to finish the very last drop.

One of the things I’ve been learning about in my classes this week is the macrobiotic diet, which focuses on the principals of yin and yang.  Part of this encompasses eating only foods that grow locally, where you live, but another part is that different foods sustain and fuel you depending on where you live. So, at the basic level, if you live in a hot environment you should eat foods that help to cool your system down. I’ve also been learning a lot about, and experimenting with, different superfoods and their benefits and this smoothie is loaded with them (cacao, blueberries, aloe, green drink).  If you want more information on super foods, please contact me! 🙂

Anyways, after my vacation I felt I needed a smoothie with serious hydration, that allowed my body to begin to detox, and was loaded with antioxidants to prevent any airborne illnesses I may have been exposed to. Which is how I came up with this strawberry-blueberry-banana goodness.

Blueberries are a superfood and are actually considered one of the healthiest foods in the world. There is SO much good packed into them: they contain one of the highest antioxidant capacities of all foods, they combat free radicals that can damage cellular structures and DNA (leading to premature aging), they maintain brain function, improve memory and eyesight, lower blood pressure and cholesterol, and are anti-diabetic and anti-carcinogenic.  Just to name a few!

Strawberries are also super good for you. They are an excellent source of Vitamin C which boosts immunity, promote eye health (most berries do!), are anti-carcinogenic, fight bad cholesterol, prevent collagen destruction and inflammatory response (hello, wrinkle-fighter!), regulate blood pressure, and relieve arthritis.

Bananas are good for so much more than just pairing with peanut butter (just me?!). They are full of potassium which actually helps lower blood pressure, support heart health, fight diabetes, preserve memory, boost mood, increase fiber intake, strengthen nervous system, combat type II diabetes, and stabilize blood sugar.

Combine these three things with a little coconut-aloe water and some superfood greens and you’ve got a winning breakfast beverage (with some leftover for dessert)!

Super Yummy Superfood Smoothie

1 banana

5 strawberries

Blueberries, handful

Coconut-aloe water (I love Trader Joes), adjust amount to your preference

1/2 scoop Amazing Grass green superfood blend (any superfood blend will do)

Shaved Coconut, generous scoop

Cacao nibs, 2 tbsp

Ice

Raw slivered almonds (optional)

Honey (optional)

  1. Add all ingredients to blender – adjust to taste.
  2. Blend.
  3. Top with a handful of almonds and drizzle of honey.
  4. Enjoy!

**This smoothie provides such a good base for building upon – have fun with it! Additional add-ins that I love: spinach, kale, almond butter, beets, raspberries, granola (for topping).


 

Also, did I mention that I finally got Oscar back after weeks of being apart!? So much love in this household today!!

  1. If you pick and choose your organic produce, Strawberry are a great place to start. As a porous fruit (many holes in the outer skin) they have a tendency to absorb chemicals at a higher concentration than other non-porous fruit. Buy organically when available and rest assured you are getting all the benefits without risk.
